Urawa Reds lift J.Youth Cup

Urawa Reds Youth on Sunday won their first J.Youth Cup title with a 2-1 victory over Nagoya Grampus U18s.

Their success prompted J.League Chairman Mitsuru Murai to declare his optimism for the upcoming 2020 Olympic Games, to be held in Tokyo.

Seika Kitano gave Grampus the lead just three minutes into the encounter at Yanmar Stadium Nagai in Osaka, but then a red card in the 27th minute handed the Reds a man advantage.

They completed their comeback in the first half through Yu Watanabe’s header as well as an own goal, and held on in the second half to preserve the scoreline and secure the title.

“I want to applaud everyone from both teams,” Murai said after the match.

“I sincerely hope that the players we saw today will continue to improve and represent Japan at the 2020 Olympic Games.”
