Yokohama FC reclaim first place in white-hot J2 chase

Shonan Bellmare conceded the top of the MEIJI YASUDA J2 League table to Yokohama FC after Wednesday night’s Round 14 action.

The BMW Stadium residents fell 3-0 to visiting Avispa Fukuoka, with striker Gilsinho scoring just before the interval and Yuta Mikado and Hisashi Jogo piling on in the second half.

Yokohama needed just five minutes to take the lead against Kamatamare Sanuki thanks to white-hot striker Ibba. They would eventually triumph 2-1 after Kensuke Sato’s winner in the 87th minute to claim their first victory in three matches.

At Ajinomoto Stadium, Tokyo Verdy eased to a 3-0 win over JEF United Chiba on goals from Alan Pinheiro as well as Yoshiaki Takagi, who netted twice to double his tally for the season.

The evening’s Kyushu Derby provided plenty of excitement in the final 15 minutes, with V-Varen Nagasaki dramatically topping Oita Trinita 2-1.

Defender Akira Takeuchi opened scoring for the visitors in the 76th minute, but V-Varen responded through Juanma’s 81st-minute equaliser and a stunning game-winner by Keita Nakamura in the 6th minute of stoppage time.

Former Japan international Seiichiro Maki’s goal midway through the second half pushed Roasso Kumamoto over the top with a 2-1 win at FC Gifu.

Matches between Kyoto Sanga and Mito Hollyhock as well as Tokushima Vortis and Zweigen Kanazawa both ended in 1-1 draws, while Thespa Kusatsu earned their second win of the season with a 2-1 result over Renofa Yamaguchi.
