Veteran striker Suzuki retires

JEF United Chiba veteran striker Takayuki Suzuki confirmed his retirement at the age of 39 on Wednesday.

The decision marks a conclusion to a 19-year career which included stints at several J.League clubs as well as teams in Brazil, Belgium, Serbia and the United States.

The ex-Japan international’s most significant stint abroad was at Portland Timbers, where he made over 50 appearances for the ex-North American and United Soccer League side.

Suzuki will retire with a combined total appearance count of 236 appearances and 41 goals in the J1 and J2 Leagues, as well as 55 caps and 11 goals for the Samurai Blue.

He made two substitute appearances for JEF United in the league this season as they finished ninth in the second-tier standings.
