Verdy take J2 lead with fifth straight win

Tokyo Verdy sit atop the 2017 MEIJI YASUDA J2 League for the first time this season after a key away win at Fagiano Okayama.

The Original 10 side nabbed three points thanks to Koki Anzai’s late goal in the 81st minute at City Light Stadium.

Verdy, who are riding a five-game winning streak since their opening day loss, overtook last week’s leaders Shonan Bellmare who suffered their first defeat of the season in a 3-0 win at Kamatamare Sanuki.

Nagoya Grampus made short work of Roasso Kumamoto in a 5-1 win, with J.League legend Hisato Sato opening his account for the Toyota Stadium residents in the ninth minute.

Out west, thunder at Level 5 stadium forced a 30-minute postponement of the match between Avispa Fukuoka and Yokohama FC.

The contest, which eventually ended in a 0-0 draw, was further delayed just nine minutes into the second half due to a sudden hailstorm which sent players and spectators fleeing for cover.
