Urawa Reds and Avispa Fukuoka to clash at Japan National Stadium for J.League Cup

From 20 teams down to just two, and on Saturday at the Japan National Stadium, the J.League YBC Levain Cup will have just one team left standing - Urawa Reds or Avispa Fukuoka.

The long road to the J.League Cup final has taken us here, to these two teams battling for one of Japanese football’s most prestigious trophies.

While any final is a massive occasion for any participating club, this match may represent the biggest day in the history of Avispa Fukuoka. They’ve never won a major trophy and this is their first-ever cup final, making this a massive day in Avi history.

Fukuoka’s run to the final has been highlighted by one of their brightest young players, Reiju Tsuruno, and their stalwart veteran, Wellington, who have scored three goals apiece in the competition.

Urawa are a very different club, in a very different situation. They are one of Japan’s most successful clubs with 20 major trophies and they are the current AFC Champions League champions, making them the kings of Asia. Expectations are always high in Saitama and they have been waiting seven years since their last J.League Cup crown, so their fans are sure to pile into Tokyo in huge numbers with dreams of yet another piece of silverware.

While Avi have found goalscorers young and old to lead their romp through the tournament, Urawa have gotten it done with excellent defense. They’ve allowed just five goals through 10 cup contests, setting up a tantalizing battle of Fukuoka’s attack against the Reds’ back line with eternal glory on the line.

The J.League YBC Levain Cup final marks one of the biggest days in the Japanese football calendar, and will become an indelible mark on one club’s history. Will it be a day to remember for Avispa Fukuoka or Urawa Reds? Find out live on the J.League International YouTube channel when these two proud clubs fight for silverware at the Japan National Stadium this Saturday.
