Urawa fall short in ACL Round of 16 after PK loss

Extra-time heroics by Tadanari Lee were not enough to prevent Urawa Reds from being the fourth and final Japanese club to be eliminated from this year’s AFC Champions League after a crushing loss to FC Seoul in penalty kicks.

The 2007 ACL champions came to Seoul World Cup Stadium boasting a 1-0 lead from the first leg, but allowed a Dejan Damjanovic goal in the 29th minute to eventually force extra time.

Adriano put the hosts up in the 94th minute, but a rapid-fire brace by Lee seemed to put the Reds through until Ko Yo-han’s last-second equaliser sent the two sides into penalty kicks.

After Yuki Abe, Wataru Endo, Zlatan, and Ryota Moriwaki successfully took their kicks, goalkeeper Shusaku Nishikawa’s missed effort sent the match into sudden death.

Tsukasa Umesaki and Tadanari Lee’s efforts from the spot were both on target, but a Yoshiaki Komai miss, combined with Kim Dong-woo’s decider, ensured that no J.League clubs will participate in this year’s quarter-finals.
