Torres scores first Sagan Tosu goal in Emperor’s Cup

The Emperor’s Cup Round of 16 opened on Wednesday night, with six matches from the round as well as a rain-delayed third round match taking place across Japan.

In the third round match, Sanfrecce Hiroshima took an early lead through Masato Kudo’s goal but could not prevent Grampus from equalizing through Shumpei Fukahori in the 18th minute. The hosts triumphed in extra time when substitute Patric scored a hat-trick to seal the 4-1 win.

In the Round of 16, Kawasaki Frontale defeated Kanagawa Derby rivals Shonan Bellmare 3-1 as Manabu Saito scored his first goal since arriving at Todoroki Stadium.

Facing his former Spain teammate Andres Iniesta, Fernando Torres scored his first goal for Sagan Tosu as they defeated Vissel Kobe 3-0.

Fabricio’s 64th-minute goal gave Urawa Reds a 1-0 win over Tokyo Verdy.

After a 1-1 draw in 120 minutes of action, FC Tokyo fell to J2 side Montedio Yamagata 7-6 in penalty kicks. In another down-to-the-wire upset, Ventforet Kofu took down Cerezo Osaka when Yutaka Soneda scored in the 120th minute.

The remaining two Round of 16 matches (Kashima Antlers vs. Sanfrecce Hiroshima and Jubilo Iwata vs. Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo) will take place on Wednesday, September 26.
