Toothless Gamba denied Evergrande breakthrough

Gamba Osaka exited the AFC Champions League semi-finals following a 0-0 draw against Guangzhou Evergrande in the second leg on Wednesday.

The Chinese champions, who progress to their second final in three years on a 2-1 aggregate scoreline, were never made to look overly uncomfortable at Banpaku Stadium.

Luiz Felipe Scolari’s visitors enjoyed the majority of chances, saves coming from Masaaki Higashiguchi on Zheng Long and Elkeson, in the first period despite Gamba looking lively throughout.

It was only following the introduction of star striker Takashi Usami in the second half that Kenta Hasegawa’s men began to threaten around the Evergrande area, although they bowed out still failing to produce anything to trouble custodian Zeng Chen.

Gamba now have the chance to make amends for their exit when they play the final of the 2015 Yamazaki Nabisco Cup against Kashima Antlers on October 31.
