Tokyo Verdy’s Under-16 team have won their category at Sweden’s Gothia Cup, becoming the first Japanese club team to triumph in the world’s largest youth tournament.
Verdy’s youngsters were praised for their technique as well as their clean play, with the side conceding just two goals in nine matches in a competition that featured 187 teams from 33 countries.
In the Boys Under-15 category meanwhile, the J.League Under-14 selection finished third amongst 221 teams from 33 countries.
The result meant them failing to win a second straight championship since taking part in the Gothia Cup since 2013, but still putting in a brave effort against older opponents.
The tournament has been a regular proving ground for the J.League’s top youth sides, who have participated in it since 2012.
