Tokyo suffer ACL home humiliation, Sanfrecce eliminated

Three J.League teams took to the pitch on Wednesday night in the fifth match day of the 2016 AFC Champions League Group Stage.

FC Tokyo were soundly defeated at home in a 3-0 loss to K-League champions Jeonbuk Motors.

Former Cerezo Osaka midfielder Kim Bo-kyung scored the opener and assisted Lee Jae-sung on the second goal, with Ko Mu-yeol making it 3-0 in stoppage time.

Tokyo will now need an away win at Vietnam’s Binh Duong in order to reach the Round of 16.

Urawa Reds secured their first knockout tournament appearance in eight years with a scoreless draw at Sydney FC, who remain on top of the group.

The result mathematically eliminated current champions Guangzhou Evergrande from progression, ensuring that there will be a new Asian representative at this year’s FIFA Club World Cup.

Sanfrecce Hiroshima joined Gamba Osaka in the elimination pile with a 1-0 loss at Shandong Luneng.

The defending Japanese champions surrendered a 10th-minute goal to Diego Tardelli and are now guaranteed a third-place finish in Group F.
