FC Tokyo on Wednesday revealed first-choice goalkeeper Shuichi Gonda has been diagnosed with Overtraining Syndrome, a condition known to affect some athletes.
The 26-year-old had complained of burnout and withdrew from Japan’s East Asian Cup 2015 squad following Tokyo’s 3-1 win over Vegalta Sendai on July 29.
The club have not announced an expected time for Gonda’s recovery, with backup custodian Tatsuya Enomoto ready to start between the posts for next Wednesday’s clash at Ventforet Kofu.
Massimo Ficcadenti’s men sit ninth in the MEIJI YASUDA J1 League second stage table after collecting seven points from their opening five fixtures.
