Shunsuke Mito named 2023 Best Young Player for breakout campaign

Shunsuke Mito had a massive breakout season for Albirex Niigata and has been recognized league-wide for his outstanding play, earning 2023 Meiji Yasuda J1 League Best Young Player honors.

Mito played well in 2022 to help Albirex earn promotion to J1, but this season marked a big step up for the 21-year-old. He showed no issues adjusting to the top flight, proving to be a constant danger man for Niigata.

At times, it seemed Mito played all across the pitch for Albirex, moving left, right and center in the band of attacking midfielders at different junctures. His versatility made a major impact and allowed Niigata to adjust to injuries, form, and opponents in their top-flight return.

The numbers only tell part of that story, but Mito scored four goals and added two assists for Albirex, including his magnificent finish in Matchweek 27 that won him Konami Goal of the Month.

In addition to helping his side earn another season in the top flight, Mito’s great play earned him a spot on Japan’s U-22 team, which will try to qualify for the 2024 Olympics at next year’s U-23 Asian Cup.

After such a fabulous 2023 season, hopes for Mito are through the roof going forward. Be it for Albirex or Japan, he will certainly be one to watch.
