Yokohama F. Marinos on Tuesday confirmed that star midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura will continue to serve as the team’s captain in 2016.
The former Celtic star will be joined by vice captains Yuji Nakazawa, Yuzo Kurihara, Shingo Hyodo and Hiroki Iikura.
Nakamura has worn the armband since 2011 and is now embarking on his sixth season at the club, but revealed he is humble in his role and only thinks of helping the team win.
“When I think of Yokohama F. Marinos’ captain, I think of (former defender and national team captain) Masami Ihara,” the Japan icon stated.
“I may overtake him this season in terms of time served as captain, but I will never outdo his presence.
“We have more young players joining the team and I want to watch over them and earn the best results possible.
“Being a captain is tough but it’s an incredible honour, and I hope to carry out the role with more responsibility than ever before.”
Nakaumra endured an injury-hit first half of the MEIJI YASUDA J1 League season in 2015 but bounced back in the second half to score three goals and assist five times.
F. Marinos will open their lague campaign at home against Vegalta Sendai on February 27.
