Sagan upset Antlers; Tokyo win with new manager

Sagan Tosu earned a surprising victory on Saturday night with a 1-0 win over Kashima Antlers in the sixth round of the 2016 MEIJI YASUDA J1 League Second Stage.

Yohei Toyoda scored the game-winning goal in the 20th minute before he and his teammates put in a colossal effort to shut out the First Stage champions in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.

The Kyushu side remain unbeaten in the stage and are now in third place.

In a SKY Series match between rival Kanagawa Prefecture sides, league leaders Kawasaki Frontale were the victors in an exciting 3-2 win over hosts Shonan Bellmare.

Goals by Shintaro Kuromaya, Yoshito Okubo, and Yu Kobayashi gave the visitors a 3-0 lead at the hour mark, but Bellmare nearly fought back with Yohei Otake and Andre Bahia

Keigo Higashi scored in front of over 23,000 fans at Denka Swan Stadium as FC Tokyo won 1-0 at Albirex Niigata.

The result was an important win for the capital club and their new manager, Yoshiyuki Shinoda, as they look to rebound from the dismissal of former manager Hiroshi Jofuku.

In a rematch of the 2015 MEIJI YASUDA J.League Championship, Gamba Osaka swept their season series with Sanfrecce Hiroshima after Hiroyuki Abe’s 52nd-minute goal made it 1-0 at the final whistle.
