Reysol & S-Pulse upset in Emperor’s Cup third round

The third round of the 94th Emperor’s Cup took place on Wednesday night, with 15 of 16 scheduled matches played across Japan as teams fought for a spot in the Round of 16.

Several J1 League sides notched big victories over J2 opposition, with Kashima Antlers winning 5-1 over Machida Zelvia, Vissel Kobe romping to a 6-1 win against JEF United Chiba, Jubilo Iwata advancing 4-1 past Renofa Yamaguchi and Consadole Sapporo shutting out Avispa Fukuoka 4-0.

The highly-anticipated Yokohama Derby went into extra time after Hugo Viera nullified Akira Toshima’s goal in the 74th minute.

The Portuguese striker was the hero of the night, scoring again in the 97th minute to put the Nissan Stadium residents through.

Kawasaki Frontale needed penalty kicks to eliminate Mito Hollyhock,  as did Shonan Bellmare against V-Varen Nagasaki.

Only two ‘giant killings’ took place on the night: Montedio Yamagata defeated Kashiwa Reysol 2-1 thanks to a dramatic Felipe Alves goal in stoppage time, while Ventforet Kofu eked out a 1-0 win at Shimizu S-Pulse via Yusuke Tanaka’s early effort.

Collegiate darlings Kwansei Gakuin University came up just short in a 1-0 loss to Tokyo Verdy.

The match between Sanfrecce Hiroshima and Nagoya Grampus, postponed due to the recent floods in western Japan, will be rescheduled for a later date.

The Round of 16 will take place on August 22 and September 26.
