Reds roar to Cerezo win

Urawa Reds and Kashima Antlers picked up their first wins of the season on the second matchday of the 2017 MEIJI YASUDA J1 League season.

Mihailo Petrovic’s Reds picked up their first three points of the season in front of their own fans, with Yuki Muto, Shinzo Koroki and new signing Rafael Silva sealing a routine 3-1 win over Cerezo Osaka.

It ensures last term’s J1 League runners-up bounced back from last week’s defeat to Yokohama F.Marinos, with Antlers likewise redeeming themselves this time out.

After losing to FC Tokyo in their opening game, the Japanese champions sealed a 1-0 win at Ventforet Kofu thanks to Leo Silva’s strike after the hour mark.

Meanwhile, Tokyo struggled to break down Omiya Ardija in the first half of their game at Ajinomoto Stadium but persevered, eventually finding the breakthrough via Masato Morishige before Shoya Nakajima wrapped up a 2-0 win in stoppage time.

Sanfrecce Hiroshima are still chasing their first win of the season, however, as they slumped 1-0 at home against Shimizu S-Pulse, Chong Tese netting the winner after the break.

Hideto Takahashi struck the winner for Vissel Kobe - who announced the signing of Lukas Podolski this week - in a 2-1 result against Albirex Niigata, a minute after Tatsuya Tanaka had cancelled out Hirofumi Watanabe’s opener.

Yokohama F. Marinos continued their excellent start to the campaign, roaring to a 3-0 win against Consadole Sapporo with second-half strikes from David Babunski, Cayman Taguchi and Hugo Vieira.

The result sees Erick Mombaerts’ men top the J1 League standings ahead of Gamba Osaka’s clash at Kashiwa Reysol and Kawasaki Frontale’s hosting of Sagan Tosu on Sunday.
