Reds rampant against third-tier Zelvia in Emperor’s Cup

Urawa Reds ran riot against Machida Zelvia on Wednesday, defeating their opponents 7-1 in the fourth round of the Emperor’s Cup.

In a true David-versus-Goliath test, the MEIJI YASUDA J1 League giants comfortably dispatched their third tier counterparts to progress to the quarter-finals, with Wataru Hashimoto, Tadanari Lee and Takahiro Sekine all netting in the first half.

Tomohiro Taira pulled one back for the hosts after the break, but it was just a short respite before the Reds reasserted themselves, putting the tie out of reach with goals from Yuki Abe, Toshiyuki Takagi, Shinzo Koroki as well as Sekine’s second.

Sanfrecce Hiroshima made harder work of Tokushima Vortis meanwhile, with the second division outfit cancelling out Yusuke Minagawa’s 70th minute opener in the 90th minute.

Byeon Jun-byum then secured a densely-plotted victory for the overall MEIJI YASUDA J1 League leaders with his strike in the third minute of stoppages.

FC Tokyo also eventually overcame J2 strugglers Mito Hollyhock 2-0, with goals in each half from Ryoichi Maeda and Kento Hashimoto respectively.
