Reds finish top of the overall J1 League table

Urawa Reds sealed first place in the overall MEIJI YASDA J1 League table on Thursday when they drew 1-1 at Yokohama F.Marinos.

The form of Mihailo Petrovic’s men has carried them top of the overall rankings as well as in the Second Stage table, ensuring they will challenge for the 2016 title directly in the J.League Championship final.

First Stage winners Kashima Antlers will face off with Kawasaki Frontale in the semi-finals, with the latter bowing 3-2 at home to Gamba Osaka in their final game.

Antlers end the regular campaign no better off, with a 1-0 home loss to Vissel Kobe seeing them wind up 11th in the Second Stage campaign and Nelsinho’s side finish an impressive second.

At the other end of the table, Nagoya Grampus, Shonan Bellmare and Avispa Fukuoka suffered relegation, with the latter going straight back down to the MEIJI YASUDA J2 League after being promoted in 2015.

Last term’s Japanese champions Sanfrecce Hiroshima finished sixth in the overall table, with their striker Peter Utaka tied at the head of the J.League’s top goalscorer table with Vissel’s Leandro.
