Player in Focus: Thiago Santana leading S-Pulse’s drive to safety

Shimizu S-Pulse have spent most of the season battling to stay out of the bottom four and keep their spot in the first division. It’s been a tough fight, but they’ve risen to the occasion as of late and avoided consecutive losses for nearly four months.

The biggest reason for their recent success? Thiago Santana.

The Brazilian striker has scored in each of the last three games and he’s scoring in every way possible. His goals in the last three games have come ghosting to the back post for a tap in, ripping a shot from 20 yards and finishing beautifully on the full volley in the box. Whether it’s movement, power or precision, Thiago Santana has it all and is turning it into goals.

The brilliant run of form that Thiago Santana is in has pushed him to 10 goals on the season and top four of any player still in the MEIJI YASUDA J1 LEAGUE this season. Those 10 goals make up more than a third of S-Pulse’s goals this campaign, showing not just how good he is, but how important he is to his club.

Thiago Santana’s outstanding play has helped S-Pulse into 15th place and now six points clear of the drop zone. Their win over Vegalta Sendai last week was massive in their push to safety, and with their star striker in terrific form, they have to feel good about their chances to stay up with Vissel Kobe coming to town this matchweek.
