Omiya Ardija went some way to making up for their torrid league form by surging to a 4-0 YBC Levain Cup win over Shimizu S-Pulse.
The hosts secured the resounding Group A win on Wednesday, netting twice in either half to issue a response to their recent form and going up to fifth in the group.
Omiya overtook Kashiwa Reysol who stumbled to a 1-0 home defeat to FC Tokyo secured by Ryoichi Maeda’s winner.
The capital side close within one point of Group A leaders Vegalta Sendai, who fought back from letting in the opener to win 2-1.
In Group B, Cerezo Osaka continue leading after they saw off 10-man Vissel Kobe 1-0 following Kota Fujimoto’s lone strike, while Hugo Vieira’s brace helped Yokohama F. Marinos battle to a 2-1 result at Sagan Tosu.
In the final match, Ventforet Kofu came away from Albirex Niigata with a 2-0 victory.
