Nakamura & Wellington named “Mastercard priceless japan Monthly MVPs”

The J.League on Thursday announced the recipients of the “2017 MEIJI YASUDA J.League Mastercard priceless japan Monthly MVP” award for May 2017.

Kashiwa Reysol goalkeeper Kosuke Nakamura was picture-perfect in four appearances for Kashiwa Reysol, with the selection committee recognising his incredible saves, quick judgment and strong leadership as the 2011 champions climbed to the top of the table.

The 2016 Rio Olympic representative was rewarded for his efforts with a call-up to the Samurai Blue squad for this month’s internationals.

“I’ve won the monthly MVP award with Avispa Fukuoka (in the J2), but receiving this honour in the J1 gives me even more confidence,” Nakamura said.

“Our good results in May were due to the strong defending of our entire squad and the hard work we’ve put in.”

In the J2, Avispa Fukuoka striker Wellington was given the nod for his five goals in six full appearances for the Kyushu side, who rose to first place in the hotly-contested campaign.

The Brazilian’s fine passing and committed defensive play have also guided Avispa closer to a return to the top flight.

“There are many very good players in this league so it’s an incredibly big motivation to receive this award,” Wellington commented.

“We’re in first place, but I’ve been able to play well because the team is doing well. I’ve focused on contributing on both sides of the ball, so to be recognized for my defensive efforts is very encouraging.”

The winners were determined by a selection committee consisting of domestic media and several J.League officials.
