FC Tokyo took a 2-1 lead over Shanghai SIPG in the first leg of the 2016 AFC Champions League Round of 16 on Tuesday night at Tokyo Stadium.
The hero of the match was Kota Mizunuma, whose free kick just before halftime made its way through the Shanghai wall and into the net to take the lead.
Sven-Goran Eriksson’s men equalised 10 minutes into the second half, but just 10 minutes after that it was Mizunuma again who responded with a spectacular volley off teammate Yuhei Tokunaga’s cross.
Tokyo, hoping to reach their first-ever ACL quarterfinal, will take the one-goal advantage to Shanghai for the second leg on May 24.
