Matchweek 25 Recap: Antlers back up to second in new era

Matchweek 25 in the Meiji Yasuda J1 League was abbreviated after three matches were postponed due to Typhoon Meari and we wish good health to all those affected. Six J1 matches were played, though, so let’s dive into the action from the top flight.

Kashima Antlers 2, Avispa Fukuoka 0

Kashima looked excellent in their first match of the Daiki Iwamasa era, riding an early own goal and a late tally by Everaldo to snap their winless skid and push them to second place in the table.

Kashiwa Reysol 2, Sanfrecce Hiroshima 3

Reysol answered the Viola’s early goal with two of their own to claim the lead, but Sanfrecce stormed back through Taishi Matsumoto and Tomoya Fujii to notch a comeback victory that has them up to fifth place.

Júbilo Iwata 0, Urawa Reds 6

Urawa ran rampant in Iwata, scoring after just five minutes and pouring it on throughout, led by braces from David Moberg and Yoshio Koizumi.

Sagan Tosu 0, Nagoya Grampus 0

Sagan had all the ball and did not struggle for shots, while Nagoya countered effectively and got chances of their own, but neither could find a way through so they settled for split points.

Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo 0, Vissel Kobe 2

Koya Yuruki scored twice in the first half with a pair of blasts from outside the box to lead the Ushi to a crucial victory that took them out of the bottom and up to 16th place.

Gamba Osaka 0, Shimizu S-Pulse 2

S-Pulse came away victorious in a massive relegation six-pointer thanks to late goals from Benjamin Kololli and Carlinhos Júnior that took them all the way up to 12th in the table and dropped Gamba into an automatic relegation place.
