Match of the Week: J1's two form teams meet

Yokohama F·Marinos have won five straight, a run that has pushed them to the top of the table.

Sanfrecce Hiroshima have been victorious in five of their last six, lifting them into the title chase in fourth place.

On Wednesday, the Meiji Yasuda J1 League’s two hottest teams meet, as the Viola travel to Yokohama in a massive battle between two teams at the top of their game.

The Tricolor, unsurprisingly, have been led by their deadly attack. Léo Ceará, in particular, has been excellent of late, scoring a hat trick over the weekend to give him six goals and three assists in Marinos’ last four games. The league leaders are now up to 41 goals on the campaign, an astounding 10 more than the next highest scoring team in J1.

Sanfrecce have also been an attack-first team of late. In the five wins they have racked up over their last six matches, they have scored 12 goals. Tsukasa Morishima and Makoto Mitsuta have led the way with five goals apiece on the campaign, but it’s really been a team effort for the Viola as offensive contributions have come from all over the squad under new manager Michael Skibbe.

The question in this match-up is who will be able to defend the opposition’s high flying attack. Sanfrecce’s defense has been a smidge better, denying opponents so regularly that Keisuke Osako has only needed to make 28 saves all season.

Will the Viola’s defense be able to keep up their excellent play against the league’s best attack? Or will the high-powered Tricolor, fueled by a great home crowd, reign supreme?

We’ll find out Wednesday at Nissan Stadium!
