Kawamata withdraws from national team

Nagoya Grampus announced on Friday that Kengo Kawamata will not participate further in Japan’s 2018 World Cup and 2019 Asian Cup present round of qualifying matches due to injury.

The 25-year-old was unable to take part in Thursday’s 4-0 win over Iraq, and now it is also confirmed he has been ruled out against Singapore on Tuesday.

“I came here to achieve results, so I’m disappointed I won’t be able to play,” Kawamata said in a statement through the Japan Football Association.

“I hope my teammates earn a win against Singapore for me. I won’t be able to play with them but I’ll be with them in spirit.”

Coach Vahid Halilhodzic handed Kawamata his Samurai Blue debut in March, with the striker scoring his first international goal in Japan’s 5-1 win over Uzbekistan.
