Kashima celebrate 1,000th match with win as Antlers leap into first place

It's a familiar sight: Kashima Antlers are leading the Meiji Yasuda J1 League table. The club celebrated their 1,000th J1 match by seeing three different goalscorers lead them past Cerezo Osaka, 3-0, and leapfrog defending champions Kawasaki Frontale for the top spot in the league.

Yuma Suzuki put Antlers in front after just six minutes, pouncing on a rebound and heading the ball home for his fourth goal of the season.

Eight minutes later, Yuta Matsumura doubled the Kashima lead when he got on the end of a perfect ball from Suzuki and finished at full sprint with a terrific volley.

The Antlers were the visitors and largely controlled the match, putting Cerezo on the back foot in Osaka. They looked every bit the part of the top team in the league and Arthur Caíke put a bow on the wonderful day with a stoppage time goal to make it 3-0.

Kashima Antlers’ 1,000 matches have been nothing short of extraordinary. They have won the league a record eight times and have been the most successful team in the history of the Meiji Yasuda J.League. It was only fitting they celebrate reaching that amazing benchmark with a victory — a victory that puts them into first place as the Antlers chase yet another trophy for their impressive cabinet.
