J.League icon Edmilson signs as Cerezo’s Forlan replacement

New Cerezo Osaka striker and J.League icon Edmilson hopes his experience can spur his club back to the top-flight after he arrived from Chapecoense on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old played for Albirex Niigata and Urawa Reds between 2004 and 2011, briefly returning to Japan in 2012 to play for FC Tokyo.

Edmilson ranks amongst the MEIJI YASUDA J1 League’s most prolific scorers with 111 goals from 236 appearances, and the veteran is now relishing his new challenge in the second tier.

“I’m happy to be playing for Cerezo and want to give my best in order to help us return to the J1,” he commented.

The veteran is expected to serve as a replacement for Diego Forlan, with Paulo Autuori’s side losing the Uruguayan’s services in June.

Cerezo also announced the acquisition of 27-year-old midfielder Magno Cruz, who most recently played for Tunisian club Esperance.
