The Japan Football Association on Tuesday announced Yuta Toyokawa has been added to the country’s final squad for the upcoming AFC Under-23 Championship in Qatar.
Kashima Antlers midfielder Toyokawa and Tokyo Verdy defender Kento Misao have now been added to the preliminary list of 21 names announced in mid-December.
Additionally, injured goalkeeper Kosuke Nakamura has been replaced by Jubilo Iwata’s Ayumi Niekawa.
Japan have been drawn in Group B for the tournament alongside Saudi Arabia, Thailand and Korea DPR, with the Samurai Blue facing the latter in their tournament opener on January 13.
The top two teams from each group will advance for the knockout stage, with the tournament’s top three teams qualifying for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
