J1 set for epic final day as Marinos, Frontale take aim at title

The Meiji Yasuda J1 League title will be decided on the final day of the season.

The first 33 weeks of the campaign were not enough for Yokohama F·Marinos or Kawasaki Frontale to move clear atop the table, so they will need Matchweek 34 to determine the 2022 champion.

The teams entered Saturday’s penultimate contests with Marinos leading Frontale by two points and they took care of business with braces by Élber and Anderson Lopes leading the Tricolor to a 4-1 win over Urawa Reds.

That was not enough to win the league, though, as Kawasaki Frontale scored a late penalty kick from Akihiro Ienaga to hand Vissel Kobe a 2-1 loss — their first in seven matches — and stay right on Marinos’ heels.

Yokohama not only have a two-point lead on Frontale, but their goal difference is 11 better too; if the two teams finish tied on points, the Tricolor will almost certainly win the league. That means Marinos likely only need a draw against Vissel on the final day to be crowned champions.

By contrast, Frontale will need to beat F.C.Tokyo to give themselves a chance — and then cross their fingers that the Ushi can get all three points.

Who will win the 2022 Meiji Yasuda J1 League title? We’ll find out in yet another J1 finale to remember!
