J1 Matchweek 17 Recap: Title contenders roll as J1 returns from international break

The Meiji Yasuda J1 League returned from a long international break with Matchweek 17 and we got some great games.

Gamba Osaka 1, Yokohama F·Marinos 2

Dawhan gave Gamba an early lead, but Takuma Nishimura and Kota Mizunuma scored five minutes apart in the second half to keep Marinos top of the table.

Kashima Antlers 1, Kyoto Sanga 0

A goal by Arthur Caike was all that separated the two teams as Kashima remained just one point back of first place.

Kawasaki Frontale 5, Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo 2

Frontale’s attack was firing on all cylinders as Akihiro Ienaga and Yu Kobayashi each scored twice and Marcinho added one of his own in a dominating win.

Kashiwa Reysol 3, Vissel Kobe 1

The Ushi scored first, but Keiya Shiihashi, Matheus Sávio and Yuki Muto all found the back of the net to earn fourth place Reysol a comeback victory.

Sanfrecce Hiroshima 2, Cerezo Osaka 1

Sanfrecce extended their unbeaten streak to five matches thanks to Gakuto Notsuda and Douglas Vieira, who scored in the 78th and 85th minutes to earn the Viola all three points and leapfrog them over the Sakura in the table.

Shonan Bellmare 2, F.C.Tokyo 0

Shonan picked up a massive win in their relegation fight as Masaki Ikeda and Shuto Machino tallied on each side of halftime.

Júbilo Iwata 3, Sagan Tosu 1

Júbilo needed a win to stay out of the drop zone and they did just that, with Fabián Gonzalez scoring twice in the first 13 minutes to kick start a big win in Iwata.

Urawa Reds 3, Nagoya Grampus 0

Urawa snapped their nine-match winless streak with a fantastic performance as Alexander Scholz, Atsuki Ito and Takahiro Sekine all scored in the opening 36 minutes.

Shimizu S-Pulse 3, Avispa Fukuoka 1

S-Pulse beat Avispa’s league-best defense an amazing three times in a fabulous showing to snap their three-match losing streak.
