Both Sanfrecce Hiroshima and FC Tokyo saw their 2016 AFC Champions League campaigns open with a setback on Tuesday night with a pair of 2-1 losses.
Sanfrecce, at home to Shandong Luneng, took the lead in the 64th minute through Kohei Shimizu’s goal but allowed a Yang Xu equaliser just three minutes later. Brazilian striker Diego Tardelli found the winner for the visitors with 12 minutes remaining at Edion Stadium.
Meanwhile, Tokyo struggled against defending K-League champions Jeonbuk Motors, allowing goals to Ko Mu-yeol and Lee Dong-gook before Takuma Abe cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 86th minute.
The opening round of the group stage continues on Wednesday night, with Urawa Reds hosting Sydney FC and Gamba Osaka away at Suwon Bluewings.
