Groups announced for 2017 AFC Champions League

The draw for the 2017 AFC Champions League took place on Tuesday night, with Japan’s representatives learning their potential opponents in 2017.

J.League champions Kashima Antlers were drawn into Group E, where they will be joined by Thailand’s Muangthong United and the winners of Playoff 1 and 4.

Japan’s participants in the remaining groups will be determined by the winner of the ongoing Emperor’s Cup, which will conclude on January 1.

FC Seoul (South Korea), Japan 2nd, Western Sydney Wanderers (Australia), Playoff 3 Winner

[Group G]
Guangzhou Evergrande (China), Suwon Bluewings (South Korea), Japan 3rd, Eastern SC (Hong Kong)

[Group H]
Adelaide United (Australia), Jiangsu Suning (China), Jeonbuk Motors (South Korea), Playoff 2 Winner


Playoff Participants:

Playoff 1: Jeju United (South Korea), Kitchee (Hong Kong), Hanoi T&T (Vietnam)

Playoff 2: Japan 4th, Bangkok United (Thailand), Johor Darul Tazim (Malaysia)

Playoff 3: Shanghai SIPG (China), Sukhothai FC (Thailand), Yadanarbon FC (Myanmar)

Playoff 4: Shanghai Shenhua (China), Brisbane Roar (Australia), Global FC (Philippines), Tampines Rovers (Singapore)


Japan’s representatives in Groups F, G, and H will be seeded based on the following scenarios:

If Kashima Antlers win the Emperor’s Cup:

Group F: Urawa Reds
Group G: Kawasaki Frontale
Group H: Gamba Osaka (Playoff 2)

(2) If Kawasaki Frontale win the Emperor’s Cup:

Group F: Kawasaki Frontale
Group G: Urawa Reds
Group H: Gamba Osaka (Playoff 2)

(3) If another team wins the Emperor’s Cup:

Group F: Emperor’s Cup winners
Group G: Urawa Reds
Group H: Kawasaki Frontale (Playoff 2)
