Gamba eliminated from ACL after home loss

Gamba Osaka became the first J.League club eliminated from the 2016 AFC Champions League on Tuesday night following their 2-1 loss to Suwon Bluewings.

The hosts had a chance to take late in the first half, but Takashi Usami saw two penalty kicks blocked by No Dong-geon after the referee called for a retake.

Brazilian midfielder Santos Junior put Bluewings on the scoreboard in the 49th minute, then doubled the team’s lead with a successful penalty kick of his own shortly before the hour mark.

A late Yasuyuki Konno goal was not enough to prevent Gamba’s first group stage exit since 2012; they will travel to face Melbourne Victory in the final match of the round on May 3.
