Gamba deal heavy blow to Reds’ First Stage title hopes

Two unplayed matches from the 2016 MEIJI YASUDA J1 League’s 10th round took place on Wednesday night, with one result having a major impact on the First Stage title race.

At Suita Stadium, Gamba Osaka defeated Urawa Reds 1-0 after Takashi Usami scored on a long counter in the eighth minute.

Last year’s First Stage winners are now in need of a miracle to defend that title, as they are seven points behind current leaders Kawasaki Frontale with a game in hand.

Meanwhile, over 15,000 fans at Ajinomoto Stadium saw FC Tokyo and Sanfrecce Hiroshima play out a 1-1 draw.

Samurai Blue striker Takuma Asano opened scoring in the 66th minute of play, but the visitors were rebuffed in the 69th minute by Kento Hashimoto’s equaliser.

The First Stage’s penultimate round will take place on Saturday, June 18.
