Frontale steal draw with shocking stoppage-time goal

Kawasaki Frontale looked like they were going to take a 2-1 defeat at Gamba Osaka. As the time ticked into the fifth and final minute of stoppage time, Kei Ishikawa held the ball and looked set to run out the match with a big boot up field. Then, Frontale pulled a shocker.

Yu Kobayashi was well behind Ishikawa, hiding behind the play. Ishikawa forgot he was there and put the ball down so he could wind up and kick it far upfield. As soon as the ball hit the ground, Kobayashi sprinted after it. Ishikawa was stunned as Kobayashi got there first and immediately passed the ball to Leandro Damião, who easily slotted it into the open net.

That goal leveled the match at 2-2 and earned Frontale a point. Gamba, who played terrifically, had to settle for a draw when they thought they had a win and it came on a goal nobody saw coming, except for Kobayashi.

It was a precious point for the defending champions and perhaps the piece of luck they need to truly kickstart their title defense.
