Frontale oust Reds in Emperor’s Cup PK thriller

The remaining five matches of the Emperor’s Cup Round of 16 took place on Saturday with five teams advancing to next month’s quarterfinals.

Naoki Wako’s 25th-minute goal was not enough for Kashiwa Reysol to get past Shonan Bellmare, who fought back for a 3-1 win with second half goals by Dinei, Kaoru Takayama, and Shuhei Otsuki.

At Noevir Stadium, Fabricio’s brace gave Kashima Antlers a 2-1 win over Vissel Kobe, who kept it close through Kazuma Watanabe’s 64th-minute strike.

A stunning Jun Amano free kick in the 94th minute gave Yokohama F. Marinos a 1-0 win over Albirex Niigata.

Sanfrecce Hiroshima easily defeated Sagan Tosu at Best Amenity Stadium with goals from Kosei Shibasaki, Peter Utaka, and Anderson Lopes.

But the match of the day was surely at Todoroki Stadium, where J.League Championship contenders Kawasaki Frontale and Urawa Reds went to penalty kicks following a 3-3 draw after 120 minutes of play.

Jung Sung Ryong saved Urawa Reds striker Zlatan’s attempt while teammate Shinzo Koroki hit the post, allowing Frontale to celebrate their shootout victory following Eduardo Neto’s successful conversion to make it 4-1.

The quarter-final round will take place on December 24, with venues and kick-off times to be announced:

Yokohama F. Marinos vs. Gamba Osaka
Kashima Antlers vs. Sanfrecce Hiroshima
Omiya Ardija vs. Shonan Bellmare
FC Tokyo vs. Kawasaki Frontal
