Kawasaki Frontale finally overcame stubborn Omiya Ardija resistance in the Emperor’s Cup semi-final on Thursday to win 1-0 and move to the final, where they will face Kashima Antlers.
Yahiro Kazama’s men needed Shogo Taniguchi to fire home the winner in the 85th minute at Nissan Stadium as Omiya continued to punch well above their weight.
Frontale therefore have the opportunity to end the season with silverware when they meet Antlers in the final, with the Japanese champions winning their own semi-final against Yokohama F.Marinos 2-0.
Despite holding out for large portions of the match against the superior F.Marinos, Masatada Ishii’s troops are through to the showpiece at Suita City Football Stadium after Shoma Doi and Yuma Suzuki scored each side of the break.
It is a chance for the side, who impressed onlookers during their second-placed finish at the Club World Club, to claim a domestic double this term.
