Frontale complete thrilling comeback on Miyagi’s stoppage-time screamer

Kawasaki Frontale had a golden chance to extend their lead atop the MEIJI YASUDA J1 LEAGUE table on Wednesday, but with less than 10 minutes remaining, it looked like it would slip through their fingers. Juan Alano had given Kashima Antlers a 1-0 lead and Frontale were struggling to create much of anything. In fact, since Antlers went in front, they had the best chances of the match and it appeared more likely they would extend their lead than Frontale would equalize.

Then, in the 83rd minute, Frontale grabbed hold of the match. It began with a foul drawn in the attacking third, and Yasuto Wakizaka delivered the free kick perfectly to the middle of the box. Kazuya Yamamura was first to it, beating out two Kashima defenders and the on-rushing goalkeeper to head home the equalizer.

Then, with the match into the fourth and final minute of stoppage time, Ten Miyagi became the hero. The 20-year-old picked up the ball 20 yards from goal, turned and hit a rocket that knuckled through the air before smashing the back of the net for a stunning winner.

From set for a loss to a win in the final stages of the match, Frontale picked up a crucial three points in their quest for league supremacy. They now sit seven points clear of Yokohama F·Marinos with nine matches to play, bringing that dream of a second straight title ever closer.
