Five goals propel Grampus to third

The final match of the MEIJI YASUDA J2 League Round 27 took place on Saturday, with Nagoya Grampus earning a big 5-2 win against Matsumoto Yamaga.

The visitors pressed early on with several first-half chances, but a 33rd-minute own goal as well as Hisato Sato’s follow up just two minutes later allowed Grampus to go into the half-time break with a 2-0 lead.

The crowd of over 31,000 fans at Toyota Stadium were treated to even more goals in the second half, with Gabriel Xavier making it 3-0 in the 51st minute before Takefumi Toma narrowed the gap for Matsumoto with his team’s opener just five minutes later.

A second Sato goal followed for Grampus soon after, with Ryota Aoki making it 5-1 late in the match and Serginho netting a stoppage-time consolation goal for the final 5-2 scoreline.

Grampus, who rose to third place with the result, are now on 46 points, nine behind the second automatic promotion spot occupied by Avispa Fukuoka.

More J2 action is in store on Wednesday, August 16 when the full Round 28 slate kicks off at 19:00 JST.
