Emperor's Cup 2nd Round Recap: Last quartet seal their places in the next round

The Emperor's Cup JFA 105th Japan Football Championship 2nd Round concluded on Wednesday night, with Gamba Osaka, Yokohama FC, FC TOKYO, and Oita Trinita all ensuring their progression to the next stage.

2025 MEIJI YASUDA J1 LEAGUE side G-Osaka ultimately proved too strong for their Japan Football League (JFL) opponents Veertien Mie, but they didn’t have things all their own way as they picked up a 2-1 win.

Indeed, Mie actually opened the scoring at Panasonic Stadium Suita, when Shogo Otake headed home after 56 minutes.

Shogo Sasaki restored parity with a sweetly-struck volley just two minutes later, however, and Deniz Hummet glanced a header beyond Mie goalkeeper Agashi Inaba in the 67th minute to make sure of the victory for G-Osaka.

Yokohama FC won by the same scoreline against JFL opposition, although they were also made to work for their victory and needed an injury-time strike from Hinata Ogura to edge past Iwate Grulla Morioka.

Keisuke Muroi put Yokohama FC ahead in the 63rd minute, but after Yusuke Muta equalised for Iwate seven minutes later it looked as though the game was headed for extra time.

Ogura made himself the hero for Yokohama FC at the death though, sending home a dramatic winner in the 94th minute to break Iwate hearts.

Things were a little more straightforward for FC TOKYO, as they defeated Zweigen Kanazawa of the 2025 MEIJI YASUDA J3 LEAGUE 3-1.

Kein Sato set FC TOKYO on their way with two goals in 12 first-half minutes - a side-footed finish in the 32nd minute and then a header 12 minutes later - with Motoki Nagakura adding a third with another header in the 85th minute. Jin Murata claimed Kanazawa’s consolation with one minute remaining.

In the day’s other game, Oita came from 2-0 down to beat fellow 2025 MEIJI YASUDA J2 LEAGUE side Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo 5-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

Sapporo looked to have assumed control of that contest in the opening half an hour thanks to a Shuma Kido bullet from distance in the 24th minute and Shido Izuma strike four minutes later, but Atsuki Satsukawa struck back for Oita with a reply from close range six minutes before half-time.

The equaliser didn’t then come until the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time, when Shinya Utsumoto’s corner sensationally flew straight into the net to send the game into extra time. There were no further goals in the additional 30 minutes, and Oita were the ones ultimately celebrating after they converted all five of their attempts in the shoot-out.
