Dramatic win keeps Nagasaki in second place

The 34th round of the 2017 MEIJI YASUDA J2 League took place this weekend as promotion-hopeful teams continued to jockey for position in the final stretch of the campaign.

On Saturday, leaders Shonan Bellmare maintained their unbeaten streak with a 0-0 draw at Kyoto Sanga.

Facing JEF United Chiba at home and with the game tied up at 1-1, V-Varen Nagasaki held onto second place with their fifth straight win thanks to a 97th-minute goal by Daichi Inui.

Third-place Avispa Fukuoka won their first in seven matches, with Keisuke Iwashita and Riki Matsuda scoring in a 2-1 win at FC Gifu.

Yokohama FC climbed into fourth place as Ibba netted a brace in their 3-2 victory at Ehime FC, while Matsumoto Yamaga dropped two spots to sixth after their late collapse against Renofa Yamaguchi.

Renofa defender Masafumi Miyagi scored twice in the 84th and 88th minutes to tie up the game before Joji Ikegami found the game-winner in stoppage time.

Nagoya Grampus ended the day in fifth place for the first time in five rounds following their comprehensive 4-1 win against Tokyo Verdy.

Roasso Kumamoto maintained their five-point gap above the relegation zone with a 1-0 win at Montedio Yamagata, while last-place Thespa Kusatsu Gunma’s options are running out following a 4-0 loss at Mito Hollyhock.

The J2 will continue with Round 35 on September 30 and October 1.
