Dortmund narrowly defeat Urawa in World Challenge

Urawa Reds were narrowly defeated 3-2 by Borussia Dortmund on Saturday night in the inaugural MEIJI YASUDA J.League World Challenge.

The sold-out affair at Saitama Stadium remained scoreless until the 24th minute, when Shinzo Koroki sent Yosuke Kashiwagi’s corner kick into the back of the net to give the hosts the lead.

Dortmund fought back midway through the second half when Turkish midfielder Emre Mor netted twice in the 76th and 79th minutes.

Reds defender Wataru Endo evened up the match at 2-2 with his 85th minute header, but the home fans were left disappointed when Andre Schurrle scored the winner less than five minutes later to wrap up the result for the Bundesliga titans.

The World Challenge will continue on July 22 when Kashima Antlers host Spain’s Sevilla at Kashima Stadium.
