Consadole win J2 League; S-Pulse earn second promotion spot

Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo clinched the 2016 MEIJI YASUDA J2 League title on the final day of the season with a 0-0 draw against Zweigen Kanazawa.

The result at the Sapporo Dome was just enough to keep the leaders ahead of Shimizu S-Pulse and Matsumoto Yamaga, both of whom finished with 84 points after their respective wins.

Shota Kaneko’s second-half goal at Pocari Sweat Stadium gave S-Pulse a 2-1 victory at Tokushima Vortis, clinching automatic promotion to the delight of over 4,000 traveling fans.

Matsumoto, who came from behind to defeat Yokohama FC 3-2, saw their road to J1 shift to the upcoming Promotion Playoffs.

There they will be joined by Cerezo Osaka, Kyoto Sanga, and playoff debutantes Fagiano Okayama who held on to six place with a 3-3 draw against Thespa Kusatsu Gunma.

At the bottom of the table, Giravanz Kitakyushu’s 3-0 loss at Montedio Yamagata saw them finish in last place, meaning they will be relegated directly to the J3 League.

Zweigen, whose draw saw them rise to 21st, will face J3 runners up Tochigi SC in a two-legged promotion-relegation playoff.
