Consadole Sapporo are alone on top of the table following their 1-0 win over second-place Matsumoto Yamaga on Wednesday in the 24th round of the 2016 MEIJI YASUDA J2 League.
Ken Tokura’s long-range header in the 15th minute made the difference at the Sapporo Dome, with the hosts preserving their clean sheet on the way to hitting 50 points in the standings.
Third-place Cerezo Osaka suffered an embarrassing come-from-behind loss at home, falling 3-1 to Machida Zelvia.
Kenyu Sugimoto put the hosts ahead in the seventh minute, but the Sakura Warriors were undone by Koji Suzuki’s brace and an additional goal by Yuki Nakashima in the second half.
That result allowed the western Tokyo side to climb to sixth place in the standings over Shimizu S-Pulse, who lost 1-0 to visiting Tokyo Verdy after Yoshiaki Takagi broke the deadlock in the 71st minute.
