The only surprises on the second day of the Emperor’s Cup opening round were the margins of victory as J.League teams cruised to easy victories in all of their matches.
The biggest win of the day took place at Kincho Stadium, where Kenyu Sugimoto’s five goals fuelled Cerezo Osaka’s 10-0 win over Shikoku League members R.Velho Takamatsu.
Other J2 League sides declared open season on collegiate opposition, with Matsumoto Yamaga winning 6-0 over Tokuyama University and Yokohama FC dismantling Yamagata University 5-0.
Sunday also marked the entry of J1 League teams into the competition: Avispa Fukuoka went into the interval tied 2-2 with Kagoshima United before scoring five second half goals.
Meanwhile, Yuki Nakamura and Kazuki Saito both scored hat tricks in Jubilo Iwata’s 7-0 result over FC Gifu Second.
The second round of the tournament will take place on September 3 and 7, with 12 more J1 League teams joining the fray.
