Bothroyd released by Jubilo Iwata

Bothroyd released by Jubilo Iwata

Jubilo Iwata will not renew the contracts of striker Jay Bothroyd and defender Avraam Papadopoulos, the club announced on Saturday.

Former England international Bothroyd departs having lead the team with 14 goals from 22 appearances this season while Papadopoulos, who arrived at Yamaha Stadium this summer, made 13 appearances in the MEIJI YASUDA J1 League.

However, they bid farewell to Jubilo after having failed to convince the club to retain them following their first season back in the top flight.

“Thank you to Jubilo Iwata for supporting me over two years,” Bothroyd commented. “I’m grateful to the front office and to coach Hiroshi Nanami for giving me a chance to come to Japan.

“I’d also like to thank our supporters from the bottom of my heart for sticking with me through the good times and the bad.”

“I’m thankful to have played at a great club like Jubilo” added Papadopoulos, who represented Greece at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

“I struggled early on with the differences between Japanese and European defending but with the help of coach Nanami and my teammates and staff I was able to adjust.

“I’m fortunate to have played here.”
