Blowout victory sees Tokyo through to ACL group stage

FC Tokyo made an emphatic entrance into the 2016 AFC Champions League on Tuesday night with a 9-0 win over Chonburi FC in the playoff round.

Manager Hiroshi Jofuku waited just six minutes for the first goal of his second tenure at the club, with Tokyo’s attack forcing a Chonburi own-goal.

Newcomer Takuma Abe followed up three minutes later with a goal of his own, and midfielder Higashi Keigo sent the team into the halftime break with a 3-0 lead.

Just over 10,000 fans watched the home side run up the score in the second half, with Ryoichi Maeda, Takuji Yonemoto, Kota Mizunuma and Hiroki Kawano all finding the back of the net.

The capital side will begin their group stage campaign at Jeonbuk Motors on Tuesday, February 23.
