Avispa upset by Renofa in Emperor’s Cup

The final four matches of the second round of the 96th Emperor’s Cup were played on Wednesday, with one J1 League meeting a shocking end to their campaign.

Nejd Pecnik’s goal was enough to see Omiya Ardija past Gainare Tottori with a 1-0 score, while Vissel Kobe were rarely troubled in a 7-1 rout of Suzuka Unlimited FC.

Yokohama F. Marinos needed 120 minutes to get past Fukushima United, with Kosuke Nakamichi and Kayke scoring in the second half of extra-time to put the 2013 champions through to the next round.

Avispa Fukuoka weren’t so lucky, however, as Takahiro Kunimoto’s brace was undone by Renofa Yamaguchi’s Yuji Hoshi in the 120th minute.

The MEIJI YASUDA J2 League side triumphed 4-2 in penalty kicks to advance to the third round for the first time in club history.

The third round of the tournament will take place on Thursday, September 22.
