Avispa capture J2 lead as Grampus falter

The unpredictable MEIJI YASUDA J2 League continued to demonstrate its twists and turns on Saturday, with the league lead changing hands yet again after the day’s eight matches concluded.

At Toyota Stadium, Nagoya Grampus took the lead early through Robin Simovic’s goal but went on to lose 3-2 to visiting Zweigen Kanazawa, who found the winner in the 87th minute when Koichi Sato scored his second of the match.

They surrendered first place to Avispa Fukuoka, whose goals in their 3-1 win over Kamatamare Sanuki all came in the first 30 minutes courtesy of Wellington, Koji Yamase, and Keisuke Iwashita.

Yokohama FC’s Ibba joined Wellington in the double-digits, netting his 10th of the year as his side beat Renofa Yamaguchi 1-0 to snap a two-match losing streak and move into second place on goal difference.

Promotion contenders Shonan Bellmare and V-Varen Nagasaki finished at 1-1, with Toshiki Ishikawa and Keita Nakamura finding their way onto the scoreboard for their respective sides in the  58th and 63rd minutes.
