Antlers edge Reds Emperor’s Cup Round of 16

The Emperor’s Cup Round of 16 took place on Wednesday night, and there were no upsets to be found as eight J1 League sides advanced to the October 25 quarter-finals.

Wataru Hashimoto and Kazuma Watanabe scored for Vissel Kobe in their 2-0 win at Matsumoto Yamaga, while Takaki Fukumitsu’s sixth-minute goal was enough to give Cerezo Osaka a 1-0 result over Nagoya Grampus.

Jubilo Iwata downed AC Nagano Parceiro 1-0 thanks to Kazuki Saito’s header, while Takayuki Morimoto netted a hat-trick for Kawasaki Frontale in their 4-1 win over Shimizu S-Pulse.

At Kumagaya Athletic Stadium, Kashima Antlers won 4-2 over bitter rivals Urawa Reds, with Mu Kanazaki scoring a brace and Atsutaka Nakamura netting what would turn out to be the game-winner.

The University of Tsukuba’s magical run ended in a 2-0 loss to Omiya Ardija, with Shintaro Shimizu scoring both goals.

In a rematch of the 2013 Emperor’s Cup final, Yokohama F. Marinos edged out Sanfrecce Hiroshima in extra time after Hugo Viera completed his hat trick in the 120th minute of play.
